The Honeymonk

the honey pig at Honeymonk’s

We’re traveling in the Southern states of the USA this week. First stop: Lexington Barbecue in Lexington, North Carolina. Locals call it “the Honeymonk” or just “the Monk,” because Wayne Monk started the place in 1962. We figured we had better check it out, since Southern Living, USA Today, Garden & Gun, and HuffPost all rank it at the top of Best BBQ lists.

Lexington Barbecue and coleslaw

It deserves every award, every accolade. DELISH! The pork shoulders are slow-roasted over hickory or oak coals for nine hours and seasoned to perfection. With a bite of the tangy coleslaw, the experience is crazy good. But with a bite of the lightest, fluffiest, tastiest hush puppies ever made, dipped in honey, the experience is Cackalacky crazy good!

hush, now.

The last great thing: it’s not expensive! We paid $6.50 each for a tray of barbecue and slaw with a side of hush puppies. It was more than enough for a meal, so no room for the pecan pie!

My First Blog Post

Welcome to our new travel blog!

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

We call our blog Wandering Star. It means planet. And since you’re here, it means you’ve just entered our orbit. We’re going to circumnavigate the Earth. So, come around with us!

We are Em and M.M., a niece and aunt collabo. We love to visit new places, try the food, enjoy the art, listen to the music, and meet the people. So, let’s go!

Who are we anyhow?

Em is an athlete who travels the country playing softball and trying local soda. Cheerwine in North Carolina. Coca Cola in Atlanta. She’ll fill you in when she’s off the mound.

MM is Em’s aunt. She has been an adventurer for many years. She has traveled to many countries around the world and even lived abroad, but her bucket list is still not complete.

Now, Em and MM have teamed up.

  • We want to share our travels with you — what we learn, what we see, what we do. Maybe you will want to do it, too.
  • We want to share the fun of blogging together. It’s a bonding adventure!

Why not just make a scrapbook and call it a day?

  • We see, hear, taste, experience things in our travels that you might like to know about.
  • We travel often, so we never lack material.
  • We can’t put our videos in a scrapbook.
  • We can do this together even when we’re apart!
